Malaysia's Claim over Sabah

“Neither the Sulu Sultanate nor the Filipino government has a claim over the North Borneo state,” said DS Ranjit Singh, an expert on Southeast Asian political history who is now a visiting professor at Universiti Utara Malaysia.

“The moment we negotiate with them, we compromise our sovereignty,” he said in a talk at Universiti Malaya today.

He said the Sulu claim was futile for three reasons: the Philippine government’s predecessors renounced all claims over the state, the Sulu court has never administered the state, and the people of Sabah agreed to form Malaysia.

For one because the sultan lost his power entirely after its capture by the Spaniards, which happened 6 months after the signing of the 1878 treaty stipulating that the British administrators of Sabah must pay cession fees to the Sulu court.

Instead the Spaniards became the rulers of the Philippines , so it was them who became the sovereign rulers of the territory of Sulu

Then after the United States Colonized the Phillippines and they took over the Spaniards place as the sovereign rulers of Sulu or Sabah , the American administrators in turn signed documents defining the international boundary of the country, Ranjit added.

“The Republic of the Philippines then inherited the Philippines from its predecessor, the US. So how can they claim in 1962 that Sabah is theirs when the predecessor has renounced that claim?”

Because of these cases it also gives a reason for malaysia not to pay the RM5,300 anymore to the sultunate

In my opinion i believe Malaysia should actually just take Sabah , for one thing because we do not deserve Sabah due to the state of our country no matter we recieve or not there will always be corruption beside oppurtunity and poor governance.

Number two do we really ? wanna take out about millions of malaysians from there homes in Sabah . Technically like us we would also fight for our rights even if the odds were faired against us like the situation in the Scarborough Shoal No matter what will happen in the coming decision .China will continue to fight to take that territory . So if China can do that why cant they ? For all we know if we claim that land we would just make the Philippines a more of a public enemy then before . Malaysia has the support of other countries .While we the Philippines have none and as of now The Philippines are already tied down by the situation in Scarborough Shoal do we need to fight in 2 fronts like our friend the United states ?

Number three if ever it comes to the point of war what would violence promote?in the world right now more waste of good resources . That could have been used to make our economy grow .

  1. I agree that Malaysia should keep Sabah, but it's not our country's situation that makes us not more deserving than them to have Sabah. Firstly, it's to crush out one problem and focus on a bigger one, meaning the Scarborough Shoal. Secondly, it's the Sultanate of Sulu that's making a big fuss over it recently. The central government is just butting in so that they don't have to use force. Besides, the US is not there to help us if anything goes wrong since they have no interest in Sabah.

  2. The Philippine and Malaysian government is on struggle over their claim of Sabah. The Aquino administration, as contested by the other would like to give up the claim over the disputed area in order to avoid further loss of lives and problem with the diplomatic relations with Malaysia. Yet, the territory is being claimed and fought by our Filipino Muslim brothers. As viewed in international law, the Sultanate’s claim of the area as their ancestral territory does not carry much weight and is open to debate. Will the Aquino give up the claim over Sabah? If this will happen, what will be the future of our Muslim brothers living in the island?

  3. The Philippine government is the institution that argues with the Malaysian government with all their claims on Sabah Island to support our Muslim citizens. Although we have the right to fight like what we did on the Scarborough Shoal issue, we do not have certain evidences that consider the Island as part of Sulu's territory. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, president of the Philippines, would more or less like to give up the disputed area thinking that there would be lots of people that would lose their lives and this tension can also affect both the countries by means of political relations.

  5. While I believe the Philippines has rights to Sabah, I also think we have a lot more issues and should just let Sabah go.

  6. Philippines, as a country, is protected by rights which help prove to other countries who are claiming on our territory that we have a stable name on that location.

  7. Malaysia's foreign minister has acted with surprise to reports that the Philippines has offered to downgrade its territorial claim for Malaysia's easternmost state of Sabah in exchange for support in a United Nations case against China. So this an interesting news to our Philippine government. Being strong about Sabah and at the end lowering its guard.

  8. It is better to solve this problem by giving Sabah to Malaysia

  9. It's no use fighting over Sabah

  10. Maybe, we should stop this and leave Sabah to Malaysia.
Ambiguity simply creates situations like the one we now find ourselves in where armed followers of the sultan have illegally entered Sabah to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs. Let us resolve this issue once and for all now and not kick this can down the road for our children and grandchildren to worry about.

  11. We can't just hand over Sabah. Filipinos have died fighting for it. We should make some sort of pact to settle all these claims.

  12. I agree that Malaysia should keep Sabah, not because the Philippines isn't deserving of it but because we haebe bigger problems to take note of like the Scarborough Shoal. The Philippines should reslove their conflicts with Malaysia and have a peaceful agreement

  13. Philippines' evidences and actions for claim of Sabah is not solid enough. Philippines is alone in claiming Sabah. The US is not there to stand beside them. Therefore, Malaysia should take Sabah instead.

  14. As of what Trisha said, Philippines isn't deserving it because we have bigger problems to take note and Philippines is too weak to fight for it.

  15. I personally think that Philippines should just give Sabah to Maylasia in order to to prevent arguments and tension between two countries. also, Philippines does not have enough proof and evidences to present that Sabah is theirs.

  16. I personally think that this fight is useless. We cant even solve such minor problems, why are we adding up bigger ones? This is nothing but absurd.

  17. Filipinos are known for being hospitable. Many Malaysians live in Sabah already. Now are we still going to fight for Sabah? And just like what Julie Ann said, this fight is useless.
